Via Verdes Across Spain

The popularity of the Via Verdes in the twenty years since their initiation in 1993 has grown incredibly. The 1,900 kms of disused railway tracks that have now become Green Ways or designated paths for walking or cycling are in some glorious natural areas throughout the Spanish mainland.

The routes which are generally pretty level are mostly surfaced and accessible for wheelchairs, cyclists, walkers and even prams and are motorised traffic-free meaning they are safe and pollution free. These routes once transported precious cargo from mines in rural inaccessible places to larger towns or ports.

The Via Verde de Aceite Route
The 77 routes throughout Spain vary in length, my local route the Via Verde de Aceite or Olive Oil Greenway is 55km long, starting to the north of Jaen city and running through olive groves and over French-engineered bridges into Cordoba province where it becomes the Subbetica Greenway.

These routes are fabulous in May when the countryside is a riot of wildflowers and it´s the perfect month for walking before the real heat of the summer - my favourite time of year in Andalucia.
